The Apalis iMX8 is a small form factor system on module based on the latest NXP® i.MX 8 SoCs. The i.MX 8 SoC offering the best performance, the i.MX 8QuadMax, features two Cortex-A72 and four Cortex-A53 application processor cores, as well as two Cortex-M4F microcontroller cores with FPU. The modern Cortex-A cores support the Armv8 64-bit instruction set.
The Apalis iMX8 SoM is ideal for building cutting-edge computer vision systems. The high-performance dual GC7000 GPU supports feature-rich, complex graphical user interfaces with multiple independent displays. Toradex partners with the Qt Company, Crank Software and others to provide optimized UI frameworks, so you can get your product to market faster.
Support for hardware virtualization, Secure Boot and the latest cryptography ensure that you can build a safe and secure system. SafeAssure® fail-over-capable display controllers ensure that critical displays are always on and show valid content. The i.MX 8 SoCs are based on an advanced 28 nm FDSOI silicon process which increases MTBF and decreases soft error rates.
The heterogeneous multicore architecture allows the offloading of critical hard real-time tasks to the Cortex M4 or M7 processors for extremely low latency. Toradex provides tooling and FreeRTOS to simplify development. You can also use the asymmetric multicore architecture for a connected low power mode or to increase security.
The SoM is available with a tightly integrated Torizon Cloud (formerly Torizon Platform) accelerating the development and maintaining your products. Some key features include highly secure and reliable remote updates, fleet monitoring and remote access.
Each module comes with environmental test reports for vibration and EMI/EMC to give you peace of mind. These modules are built with highly reliable eMMC flash memory, and tools like the Toradex Flash Analytics tool allow you to monitor flash wear in a simple manner.
The Apalis iMX8 is pin-compatible with the other CoMs in the Apalis family (*). This allows existing Apalis-based products to easily scale and migrate to the new Apalis iMX8. All of Toradex's Apalis Carrier Boards are compatible with the Apalis iMX8. Extensive product documentation, developer support, service partners and third-party carrier boards build our strong Apalis ecosystem.

Toradex offers free support and maintenance for embedded Linux and FreeRTOS on the NXP i.MX 8-based Apalis iMX8 SoMs. This allows system designers to focus on the application only, instead of focusing also on the OS and low-level device drivers. Other OSs, such as Android and QNX, are supported by our partners.
Torizon is a ready-to-use Linux-based software platform ideal for use in areas like industry and medicine, where reliability is critical. It is a developer-friendly ecosystem that simplifies the process of developing and maintaining embedded software.
Toradex develops and maintains a Yocto Project-compatible, production-quality embedded Linux BSP in-house.
Toradex provides direct support for FreeRTOS on Apalis iMX8 and Apalis. FreeRTOS is a real-time OS that runs on the Cortex-M4 cores in parallel to the main OS.
Android on Apalis iMX8 is supported by our service partner Kynetics. An evaluation BSP is provided free of charge as a binary installer directly on Toradex Easy Installer feeds.
QNX is a microkernel-based OS primarily targeting safety-critical embedded systems. An evaluation image is provided for Apalis iMX8 directly from BlackBerry/QNX.

The Apalis iMX8 comes with two Cortex-M4 cores clocked at a fast 266 MHz. These cores are ideal for offloading hard real-time applications from Linux, as the M4 allows for latencies measured in microseconds.
Other common use cases are active low power modes, where the main cores are switched off for functional safety while the M4 cores run an RTOS like SafeRTOS from the ECC-protected, tightly coupled memory inside the i.MX 8.
Toradex also invests in making the M4 core easily accessible to you, with developments such as Visual Studio Code integration.
